For many adolescents, screen time is an ongoing challenge. Computer use seems to be a must, both academically and socially, resulting in hours of both productive and unproductive screen time. "Binge watching" via online streaming services is the current trend as a way to unwind after a long day, and to fuel exciting conversations with friends who are doing the same.
Popular streaming services such as Netflix, Hulu, and HBO are just a few of the many online options on which our students can access, stream, and watch–all within seconds. Access to inappropriate content is just a click away. There is a trend emerging involving an overexposure to images of violence, sex, and alcohol, as well as harsh language, amongst children of all ages. In particular, Netflix has recently released this resource (https://www.wannatalkaboutit.com/), as it has recently released shows and movies that contain content that can be inappropriate and heavy for any viewer, especially middle school aged children. Therefore, if your child has access to a streaming account, they can access any show or movie that does not have parental controls.
Below are some suggestions when monitoring what your child is watching:
· Put parental restrictions and controls on streaming services
· Password protect your account so that your child must have permission to access content
· Watch movies or shows together
· Create an open dialogue regarding what your child is watching and what they are seeing
· Monitor when, how, and where your child is using their device
